Fig Leaf Gourd

💗 All our seeds are grown organically in Australia -> What makes our seeds special💗

  • Fig leaf gourd (also known as shark fin melon) is one of the most prolific vegetables you can grow – a single vine can produce over 100 gourds each the size of a large watermelon. Once established one plant will be enough to feed your street!
  • Benefits: All parts of the plant are edible including the black seeds which can be eaten as a pepita.  Long storage life, and stores for a year in the pantry. It is a perennial vine in all areas with no or only mild frosts, becoming more productive in its second to third year. A game changer in warm-tropic areas as it is resistant to powdery mildew.
  • Uses: Neutral to sweet flavour, can be used anywhere zucchini is used but has a milder, more tender flavour. Great in soups, stews and stir fries. A wonderful substitute for meat in many dishes. In South America where it originates, it is more commonly used in desserts.
  • Size: This is a vigorous vine and will need a tall trellis, or be planted against a shed wall, fence or why not try a living teepee? You can also let it sprawl over a large area. Great in large pots or grow bags. Prune regularly to keep in check.
Sowing: Sow seed indoors in early spring in individual punnets and plant out once the risk of frost has passed in your area. Check out our corn seed sowing guide for a free and easy trick for sowing into individual punnets. Or sow direct in garden beds in late spring and summer, once the risk of frost has passed in your area.
  • Planting: Grows well in full sun or part-shade. While not fussy about soil type, it will be more productive if you enrich your soil with with compost, worm castings and gentle manures (cow, sheep, horse) and feed through the season with fertiliser.

Please note seeds can be shipped across Australia, but due to quarantine restrictions we cannot ship seed to WA or Tasmania.
